A Diamond Year for Ginetta

This year’s Show theme ‘built to last’ coincides aptly with Ginetta Cars’ 60th anniversary.

In sixty years of continuous sports and racing car production, Ginetta have gone from the humble G2 with its Ford 8hp engine to the all-new G60-LT-LMP car which raced at this year’s Le Mans 24 hours.

Ginetta Cars was formed by four brothers, Douglas, Bob, Trevers and Ivor Walklett in Campsea Ash, Suffolk. After building a one off special based on a Wolseley chassis, they went into production and started to build what is now known as the G2. Only about twenty of these cars were built of which seven still survive, they were certainly built to last.

The G3 soon followed and in 1961 the G4 was announced at the Racing Car Show in London. With the success of the G4 the company moved to bigger premises in Witham, Essex. Other limited production models followed but in 1967 Ginetta’s bestselling car to date, the G15 was announced at the Earls Court Motor Show. Production of this car was moved to larger premises in Sudbury Suffolk. In 1989 the four brothers decided it was time to sell the company, their last car being the fully type approved G32.

Under new management the mighty G33 V8 appeared but troubled times followed and the company was sold in 2005 to Lawrence Tomlinson, head of the LNT Group. The company are now based in a state of the art factory in Garforth where they produce the G40, G40R, G55, G57, G58 and the G60-LT-LMP cars.

The Ginetta Owner’s Club is delighted to be celebrating this important milestone at the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show, with Discovery. On their stand 2-540 you will be able to see the oldest surviving Ginetta along with a G4, a G15, a G32 and something very special.

The Club will also be celebrating at their 60th anniversary event being held on 12 August 2018 at the Wroxall Abbey Hotel in Warwickshire.  The event is open to all Ginetta enthusiasts and they hope it will be the biggest gathering of Ginetta’s ever seen!

About the Ginetta Owners’ Club

The Ginetta Owners’ Club formed in 1973 aims to preserve and further the Ginetta marque. Like many car clubs it was started by a couple of Ginetta enthusiasts and is now in its 45th year.  The club has an active motorsport scene, an active website and full colour quarterly magazine offering members help & advice on all Ginetta models.  The Club has strong links with Ginetta Cars and Lawrence Tomlinson who has kindly donated all of the surviving body moulds of the older cars to the Club meaning body panels are now available for the first time in many years.
