When it comes to this year's Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show theme of Family Ties, our friends at Meguiar's are experts, given they are one of the most successful family businesses in the world.
Meguiar's was founded by Frank Meguiar Jr. in 1901, who started out with just one bottle of furniture polish made using an egg beater. After he passed away in 1950, his three sons, who were his business partners, took the company to the next level. Maurice, the oldest, was the sales manager. Next came Malcolm, who shared his dad's love for formulating and created most of the products that the company offered, some of which are still marketed today, including Meguiar's Cleaner Wax, which is still one of the best selling liquid car waxes in America. The youngest of the three brothers, Kenneth, was in charge of production. It was the perfect partnership and through their hard work and leadership the company thrived through its second generation.
The company is now in the hands of its third generation with Frank's grandson and Malcolm's son Barry at the helm. For Barry, working at Meguiar's started during his school years, working summers replacing production employees when they went on holiday.
In high school, he began working part-time year round in accounting, becoming the one-man accounting department during his college years. Meguiar's gross sales were $600,000 per year, with most of the 12 employees being family members.
Fast forward to today, the Meguiar's line of products still saturate the consumer marketplace, offering car care solutions for the hobbyist and the do-it-yourself lover alike.
From its inception, Meguiar's has been an active participant in the collector car hobby. Barry Meguiar explains, "We are car guys who happen to be in the car wax business. The ultimate experience for us comes when our two passions merge in the exhilaration of "Best of Show" winners who regularly use our products."
For the past 11 years, the Meguiar's Club Showcase has been the centrepiece of the Lancaster Insurance Classic Motor Show. Its winners, picked from the 'best of the best' from the club show scene, own some of the best and most diverse vehicles in the UK. Being a finalist is a huge achievement but also brings you into the Meguiar's family, as you become a member of a unique group of owners who enjoy all the accolades a play in the showcase brings. They are tied together by their passion for classic cars.
