2003 BMW 530d, Ship Duley

The E39 generation BMW 5 Series was launched at the 1995 Frankfurt Motor Show, and it delivered excellent quality and refinement along with a range of smooth petrol and diesel engines. A desirable modern classic, this one was bought by its owner back in 2015.

“I’d always wanted one of these and really admired the styling and build quality, but this one was in a very sorry state. I knew it was going to need a lot of work, and the first thing I did was undertake a thorough overhaul of the suspension. I’ve fitted coilover units and it’s lower than standard, but still has a comfortable ride.”

That was just the beginning because in 2016 it was treated to a full re-spray, and it has since benefitted from a stainless steel exhaust system and a comprehensive overhaul of the brakes. The engine has also received attention so this executive saloon now performs exactly as it should.

Ship also says that the Mini he owned when he was young inspired him to upgrade the BMW’s audio system, and you can be sure that the high-performance amplifier and speakers that he fitted deliver brilliant sounds. A final improvement was the 20-inch Alpina wheels and low profile tyres, so it looks great, too.

“I’ve really enjoyed taking it to shows, and it always gets lots of attention. Over the years I’ve had to make decisions on selling cars from my collection, but I just can’t part with this one. It has too many memories.”

We can certainly understand why Ship doesn’t want to let this wonderful BMW go, and when you consider all the work he’s done we are sure that many enthusiasts would feel the same. It’s a real treat to see it at this year’s show.
