Meet & Greet the Shows Official Auction Partner and its Principal Auctioneer
We sat down with Rob Hubbard Managing Director of Iconic Auctioneers (formerly Silverstone Auctions) the shows official auction partner to find out a bit more about the man behind the hammer.
How long have you been in the auctioneering business? I joined Iconic Auctioneers, or Silverstone Auctions as it was then in 2021 as the Principal Auctioneer and Managing Director, before that I was at Bonhams from 2007. Cars have always been a passion so it is great to combine the two!
What’s your specialism? As well as auctioning the items on sale I also consign them. Finding rare cars and presenting them on the best international platform is what I love. I take great pleasure in giving my clients top customer care. You build a trust and work in partnership to understand the item being offered and then connect it with suitable buyers via the company’s international marketing and my own black book of contacts.
What’s the most you’ve sold a car for? Personally consigned £740,000 as a company $38,115,000 under my gavel £4,400,00. And the least £250!
What was the one the got away? I sold my BMW M3 Cecotto – I wish I’d kept that.
What would you never part with? My 1924 Vauxhaul 30-98. The best car, which I regularly trial as well as the odd hillclimb.
What’s the best classic you’ve ever owned? A 1969 Marcos 3 Litre bought from a chap in Bury in 2002. It was the one to have, wooden chassis, Ford Esses V6 etc.
How do you know how much a car is worth? Our team of 12 specialists have years of experience between us, so collectively we will discuss a vehicles valuation to provide as realistic estimate of what we think it may sell for. However, if more than one person wants it and a bidding war starts, then that is when things get exciting and guide prices go out the window!
What are the cars to watch? Prices are constantly moving, with new trends and generational changes. We’ve seen a recent rise in cars from the 80s and 90s, especially homologation specials and JDM cars, made famous by the likes of video games and films, whilst your more traditional classics from the 50s and 60s are more static. But I always say buy what you love!
What would you say to someone who has never been to an auction? Come along and watch, the saleroom is an exciting place full of action and adrenaline. Everyone is welcome to spectate, you don’t have to be a buyer or seller to enjoy the action. We look forward to welcoming you.
