50 Years of GTI: The Oldest Golf GTI in the World?

The Mk1 Golf Owners Club is celebrating 50 years of the Golf GTI with a special display bringing together four exceptional examples of the iconic hot hatch.

Taking pride of place is the oldest known Golf GTI in existence, manufactured in June 1976. Owned by club founding member Rajan Paymaster, the car was also crowned Best In Show at the club's 2026 Annual Gathering, making its appearance at the NEC a particularly special one.

Joining it is Adrian Daniels' Lhasa Green GTI, which has been owned for more than 20 years and has been modified with a supercharged engine. Alongside it sits Simon McNamara's stunning original Lhasa Green GTI, a former Best GTI winner at the club's Annual Gathering and 2017 Pride of Ownership winner.

Completing the line-up is Gemma Brown's Paprika Red Cabriolet GTI Quartett, which has featured in Classics World magazine and took home Best Interior at the club's 2026 Annual Gathering.

From the earliest surviving GTI to carefully preserved, modified and award-winning examples, this display brings together some of the club's most celebrated cars to mark half a century of the Golf GTI.
