It’s been 40 years since Saab released their 2.0 16-valve turbocharged engine. Heralding a new era for Saab, the engine would first be seen in the existing 900 range before making its way into the soon-to-be-released 1985 Saab 9000.
The Smorgasbord combination of 16-valves, high compression and turbo charging proved to be an engineering challenge for all motor manufacturers, but Saab, with plenty of turbo experience under their belt already, brought it to the market first.
This year, at the 40th anniversary of the Classic Motor Show, we have four Saab 900 models on display, all powered by the legendary B204 2.0 16-valve turbocharged engine. We have three T16S models featuring the iconic aero body kit: a 1984, 1985, and 1990, along with a 1993 special edition run-out model, the Ruby.
In fact, after a difficult and protracted launch, the majority of the British public would have seen the aero body kitted 900 T16S model for the first time at the 1984 NEC British Motor Show. Fitting then, 40 years, 2 weeks, and 5 days later, we have another silver 1984 T16S model on display along with its later contemporaries.
