They say that good things come in threes, but Wiscombe Park seems to consistently inspire a fourth. For the second year in a row the VSCC Competitors have stormed the Hill Climb, breaking not one, not two, not even three, but another four records. Starting early in the day Nigel Dowding in a Riley Brooklands broke the longstanding Class 2 record, which had previously been held since 1999. Jon Giles took Fastest Vintage, breaking the Class 13 record, and the HWM Stovebolt Special ably piloted by Simon Taylor appeared to be something of a crowd favourite - even more so after breaking the Class 18 record for Pre-61 Sports/Racing Cars.
Another impressive entry was that of Theo Hunt, some of you may recognise his name as one of our 2023 record breakers, who continued his demonstration of excellent skill taking Fastest Time of Day in the Nash TT Replica, and winning the non-Vintage Class record along with it. Clearly one moment in the spotlight just is not enough for Young Member Mr Hunt as he also treated the crowd to a great show in the family 1953 Frazer Nash Le Mans Replica. The Club is keeping Theo modest: as he had already won FTD he was not eligible for Fastest Young Driver too, this was instead won by Archie Waterfield in his family Nash.
Wiscombe Park is a great event for our Young Competitors, thanks to the generosity of the Bonham Christie family who not only sponsor a Trophy aimed at our under-30s, but also sponsor their entry fees too. Harry Hoskins, first time hill climber with the Club, was quick to email his thanks – “Just wanted to send you a quick message to say how much I enjoyed my first hill climb yesterday! I had a fantastic day so will be entering a couple more in the future. Thanks to all the Organisers and Marshals. Also thank you to the Bonham Christie family for waving my entry fee!”. William Butler won the Bonham Christie Trophy for Best Handicap Performance by a Young Driver in a Riley Special, breaking the GN/Nash stronghold on the other awards.
Wiscombe Park is always a firm favourite on the VSCC event calendar thanks to the beautiful bluebell lined course, skilled ascents resulting in broken records, and the fantastic Spring weather, but remember this round is just the opening Hill Climb in a fantastic Speed Season with the VSCC. Seven more rounds eagerly await us over the coming months, and we would love for you to join us at any or all of them.
