Scholar engines were formed in September 1968 to produce modified performance road, race, rally and various competition engines. During this period of time they gained an enviable record for producing highly competitive cost-effective engines for a wide range of applications.
Situated in Mendlesham, Suffolk, the 6000 sq. ft. workshops are comprehensively equipped to carry out a vast range of in-house machining and testing operations for restorer and racer alike. This includes cylinder boring and honing under operating conditions, computerized camshaft, airflow and dynamometer testing. The workforce has over 150 years combined experience of working with classic and modern high performance and race engines.
One of Scholar’s most outstanding achievements has been in the ultra-competitive “Formula Ford” class, both in the Kent engine and latterly Zetec engine categories. Many famous racing drivers have used the services of Scholar during the early parts of their careers. In 2023 the Scholar name returned to the front of the grid in several genres including Formula Ford 1600. In 2025 they are celebrating drivers achieving multiple consecutive championship wins in the UK and in Ireland.
At present they are building (and rebuilding) classic and modern engines like Ford Kent, Pinto, Zetec, Duratec, Austin A-Series, Rover K-series, Jaguar 6 Cylinder and Vauxhall engines for road, track and competition use - and it doesn't stop there. Give them a call if you have a requirement for a fresh build or a rebuild of your classic engine!
