1948 Leyland Titan PD1 – Barton 473/JRR 404

This Leyland Titan PD1 was supplied to Barton Transport of Nottingham in 1948. With coachwork by Duple it was a new post war design with a very high specification including a side gangway in the upper saloon permitting a height reduction, in the case of 404, unusually combined with a front entrance which included vacuum-operated double doors. The interior benefitted from heaters and it even had a clock on the bulkhead. In Duple tradition, fluted aluminium exterior mouldings completed the distinctive appearance.
JRR 404 entered service on June 1 1948, and was not withdrawn until July 1973. It eventually joined the Transport Museum Wythall fleet in April 1982 and has recently undergone a thorough restoration with extensive timber frame repairs, repanelling of the lower deck and a repaint in the original style of livery with distinctive advertising. A full retrim using original pattern moquette adorns both decks. The bus is making its first offsite premiere appearance on the FBHVC stand at the Classic Motor Show.
