1969 Alfa Romeo Giulia 1600S, Simon Adams

Plenty of classic car enthusiasts aspire to owning an Alfa Romeo, and for many a model like the one we have here would be at the top of their list. And being the rare 1600S only adds to this sporting saloon’s appeal.

Simon is a long-time fan of the famous Italian marque and purchased this example earlier in the year. “It had been restored in The Netherlands around fourteen years ago, and was brought to the UK by motoring journalist, Nik Berg. By 2021 it belonged to Ray Armes, a former driver in the British Touring Championship, and that’s who I bought it from.”

He goes on to say that he was looking for a Giulia, although not necessarily this model, but it was the overall condition and the work that had already been done that made it stand out from others on sale. And it’s rarity was a further attraction for the self-confessed Alfa enthusiast.

The owner goes on to explain that Ray made a number of improvements to the car, including an engine rebuild by the Dorset-based Peter Smart Classic Alfas Ltd. The fizzing twin-cam motor now produces 120bhp and Simon adds that the Alfaholics exhaust system and Weber carburettors combine to produce a lovely sound.

Simon plans to do some work on the interior and suspension over the winter, return some exterior parts to original specification and make some changes that will bring the driving dynamics up to date.

It’s taken part in the occasional track day where it performs very well and gets plenty of attention from other participants, and a tour in Italy is planned for next year. The owner intends to maintain its ‘weekend racer’ style, and just continue to enjoy this fun and usable classic Alfa. That sounds perfect to us.
