1994 Peugeot 106 Rallye, Ashley Moulds

The proud owner has been around hot hatchbacks from a young age, and one that always caught his eye was the car we have here. Having become a fan of French cars this wonderful 106 Rallye that he’s owned for three years was the perfect choice.

“I just saw it parked on a driveway in a local village and knocked on the door to ask if the owner was selling it. He said no at first but then called me a couple of months later, and I did a deal straightaway.”

Ashley explains that it had sat untouched for more than ten years, so it wasn’t in great condition but adds that although there was corrosion to deal with he had definitely seen worse. Having the body shell acid-dipped was the first step of the project, and a donor car provided some of the body panels and other sections. “You can’t get them new, so this was the only way. Some items I found were the very last in the whole country.”

That was just the beginning because the little Peugeot also needed a complete mechanical overhaul which included a detailed engine rebuild. Work began in October 2021 and took a year to complete, and while specialists were involved in some aspects of the work Ashley built the car back up himself.

It was something he had always wanted to do, and it’s clear that his enthusiasm and attention to detail really paid off. There aren’t many of these cars left on UK roads, and few can be as superb as this example, so it certainly deserved the awards at its first show in 2023.

The owner says that it’s a pleasure to drive and always gets plenty of attention, making all of the hard work worthwhile.
