1970 VW Beetle
I have owned this Volkswagen since April 2024, but the dream started much earlier. After spending six weeks in intensive care during a serious battle with COVID in 2020, I came away with a different outlook on life and decided it was time to stop putting things off and buy the Resto Cal show car I had always wanted.
The car was originally restored by Liam Richardson in 2020. Since buying it I have made a number of changes to make it my own. These include Eva Resto premium air suspension, chrome five-spoke wheels, a period-style rear rack, a swamp cooler and LED show lighting. Together, these modifications have helped create the look and character the car has today.
With 54,000 miles on the clock, this isn't a car that only comes out for shows. It has never been trailered and is driven to every event it attends. I use it most weekends, and for me, driving the car is just as important as displaying it.
One of the things I enjoy most is seeing people's reactions. Whether it's parked on a busy high street or on display at a show, the car always seems to make people smile and start conversations. It's great to see the enjoyment it brings to people of all ages.
The car has been featured in VolksWorld, Volksmania and Air Style VW, and is due to appear in GR8 Magazine later this year. It has also enjoyed success on the UK show scene, winning Best in Show at TUCKED at the British Motor Museum 2026, Best in Show at CNVCTD 2025, Best Interior at DR1VR Show 2026, Best Interior at INVTE Show 2026, as well as Top 10, Top 15 and Top 20 awards at several major events including Edition Show, Ultimate Dubs, Ultimate Stance and Ultimate Show.
While I'm incredibly proud of the trophies and magazine features, the best thing about owning this car is simply getting behind the wheel and sharing it with others. For me, it's a reminder that life is short and that classic Volkswagens are best enjoyed on the road.
