Autumn 2015 Winner - Steve Mills' 1926 Packard 420

Steve Mills, a lifelong wooden boat builder and restorer, was inspired by the elegant mahogany-bodied cars of pre-war France, particularly those by coachbuilder Labourdette. When work slowed, he began creating his own tribute using a fire-damaged Packard 420 imported from America in 2010. Over four years he rebuilt the chassis and drivetrain, then meticulously replicated period methods with oak ribs, copper nails, mahogany veneer, and varnish, producing a stunning handcrafted masterpiece.

James Cribb’s Metro City, affectionately known as ‘Gerty’, was his late wife Marg’s first and only car. Taken off the road in 2007 due to corrosion, James couldn’t let go of the car she adored. In her memory, he undertook his very first restoration project, guided by a Morris Minor manual. His dedication touched the public, winning him Practical Classics’ Restorer of the Year 2016. Today, Gerty shines in Marg’s honour.

Spring 2017 Winner - Keith Edmunds 1972 Triumph Spitfire

Keith’s Triumph Spitfire may look classic, but under the bonnet it’s anything but. Inspired by 1960s–70s British ragtops, Keith modernised his Spitfire with a Vauxhall C20XE Redtop engine, Ford Type 9 gearbox, Suzuki Hayabusa throttle bodies, and upgraded brakes and exhaust. With 185bhp and 192lb.ft of torque, it’s a serious performer. Seven years in the making, this one-of-a-kind convertible showcases Keith’s vision, skill, and passion for pushing British classics into bold new territory.

Spring 2024 Winner - Colin Fidler 1956 Austin A35

This charming Austin A35 was rescued from a front garden by the owner’s Uncle Robin, who nicknamed it ‘Rusty’. Following his passing, the restoration became a family affair, completed in April 2022. Painted in its original colour with all chrome restored, the mechanicals fully overhauled and a new-old-stock manifold fitted, this delightful little classic now shines in memory of Robin.

Spring 2025 Winner - Rory Clague 1985 Vauxhall Nova Saloon
